If your pressure only increased a little bit then I would recommend replacing the unloader with the revised one. We have put many of the new revised unloader valves into machines that continue to have pressure issues and have had very good results on getting the pump back to full pressure. The link for the revised unloader is at the top of this page if you want to replace it.

We have seen this very often, usually this build up is caused by water sitting in the pump for long periods of time with out being used.

There are a couple things you should do to keep the build-up from happening again, these included:

1. Drain a majority of the water out of the pump, you can do this by pulling the engine over 3 or 4 times after your done using it, make sure the engine is turned off and the high pressure hose is disconnected.

2. We also recommend purchasing a inline filter to protect your pump from incoming sand and sediment from your water supply.

3. Another thing to consider is to use a winterization product on your pump in the winter. Karcher makes a product called "Pump Guard", this product will also prevent any water from the inside of the pump from causing damage by freezing during the winter months.

When I took the valve out there was a great deal of white powder that was built up in the cylinder that the unloader moves up and down in. From what it looks like this might be hard water deposits, does anyone know if there is anything that I can do to prevent this build up from happening again?

Randy,
Yes, as far as I know, if your unit has a shroud over the pump, then it IS one of these affected units. We have probably seen 200 of these units in our shop for service over the years and quite often, they have very few hours on them. As an alternative to replacing the pump, we sell complete reconditioned Karcher units with hose, gun and wand for $300-$329, depending on the engine. Sorry, but there are just no easy (or inexpensive) solutions to this problem. Thank you for posting! Jerry.

I think I have one of these DeVilbiss pressure washers. If I have a plastic shroud over the pump, is it one of these models for sure? I have lost all pressure in this unit, but it is only 2 years old and I have only used it maybe 3 times. Assuming that I do in fact have one of these pressure washers, could this pump have failed already? I really don't want to sink another $225 into this machine already....if at all! Thanks, Randy.
